This is a vintage (c. 1959) Telefunken ELA M 251 E tube condenser microphone. This particular “Export” (designated by the E on both the body and the power supply) example, serial number 387, is in very fine all original condition, and includes the original case, power supply, and cable! Offered for a very brief period, some experts estimate between ’59-’62, while Telefunken suggests ’59-’65, the 251 has achieved the premier status as being considered the best microphone ever made.
With a production quantity of less than 3,000 units total, this very rare mic has become one of the most sought after pieces of vintage audio equipment. Featuring (3) polar patterns (Cardioid, Omni, Bi-directional), a 6072 tube for the (E) export version, the famous AKG CK12 capsule, the original NG 950EC power power supply (#501), the original cable, and the original case.
Along with the 251 sounding as good, if not better than its U47 and C12 competitors, the 251 became extremely popular thanks, in part, to its simplistic construction and ease of repair, while perhaps most famous for being an unbelievably profound and incredibly transparent guardian of sound.
This mic was recently purchased from a well known Los Angeles studio. It has remained in the same safe studio environment for the last 20 years, and was only used in a professional setting. It works perfectly and sounds incredible.
