This is a vintage 1979 Gibson Les Paul Standard electric guitar. This particular example, serial number 72209085, is in very excellent original condition and includes the original black hard shell case with blue interior! According to the 2nd owner, this instrument was custom ordered from Gibson by a pro player in Japan, who wanted a Les Paul Standard with a Tobacco Sunburst 2-piece book-matched flame maple top. The result is quite beautiful: an extremely rare guitar that isn’t a regular production piece. There is said to be a small batch of Les Paul Customs from the late-’70s with flame maple tops, however, I have not seen a similar Les Paul Standard documented in this configuration from this era. This pre-Leo’s/Guitar Trader ‘Burst is a really special specimen, so don’t miss out on this vintage guitar priced less than a new one!
Aside from a very recent refret, this guitar is in 100% all original condition with absolutely no structural issues whatsoever. With no breaks, no cracks, no repairs, and no other modifications, it represents both a great collector’s piece, as well as, a fantastic player’s instrument.

While this ’79 Les Paul Standard clearly sports no resemblance to a reissue, (with it’s large headstock profile, chrome hardware, Nashville tune-o-matic bridge, gold barrel knobs, etc.), it has a very exotic and authentic appeal. It’s rare such a gorgeous piece of flame maple would be finished in a Tobacco Sunburst with a completely opaque black outer edge, but the original owner specifically requested this finish. In addition to the finish and wood configuration, the original owner ordered a very slim ’60 profile neck shape which also features figured flame maple.
The guitar plays great and sounds fantastic. The Patent No. stamped pickups sound great, and have substantial output. It’s a truly enjoyable guitar to play, and while it weighs over 10 lbs, it remains quite comfortable. The original case is in good shape, thought the handle has been replaced and the original owner’s band name was painted in a small area on the exterior.
