1973 Hofner 500/1

Here’s a vintage 1973 Höfner 500/1 electric violin bass guitar. Most notably played by Sir Paul McCartney, this iconic hollowbody bass is instantly recognizable to even those whom are not familiar with basic guitar makes or models. This particular example, serial number H00046, is in near mint 100% all original condition, and includes an original hard shell case! Some enthusiasts feel that these later production/2nd generation varieties are actually higher-quality instruments than earlier versions, and having owned many of each variant, I would be inclined to agree. This particular example is far and beyond the best playing Höfner bass I’ve ever put my hands on, with the lowest action imaginable, and the straightest neck of all time. Similarly, this bass has great-sounding blade pickups, and is an all-around incredible example.

This ’73 Höfner 500/1 violin bass features:

- Violin-shaped body design

- German spruce top
– Figured maple back and sides

- Rosewood fingerboard
– Double-bound body and bound neck
– 512B “Blade” pickups

- Gold silkscreen logo

The bass plays and sounds incredible. Clearly, it features the classic Hofner, rich yet percussive, bass tone but it also has particularly premium action. The neck is perfectly straight, which is often not the case, and the low action enables easy playability. The original electronics are in perfect working condition, and all of the switches and potentiometers function without producing scratchy and dirty noises.

The cosmetic condition of this 500/1 is quite crisp. While it displays typical visible weather-checking, it exhibits virtually no visible playing wear. The hardware and plastic appointments are super clean, perfectly intact, and nicely preserved. The 2-piece maple back features heavily figured flame maple, and looks absolutely stunning.

Absolutely perfect for recording, while also great for those who want a killer sounding bass for live performances, Hofner basses have become an absolute staple in most studios. Hofner basses have often enjoyed the rightful reputation for being great basses for both bassists and guitarists alike, and just an all-around fantastic recording tool, and this one is better than most.

The original case is very nice, with the band name “Phoenix” stenciled on the exterior. All latches and hinges function perfectly, with no issues, and no odors.
