This is a vintage 1970s matching stereo pair of racked UREI LA-3A Leveling Amplifiers. These two early production units were recently removed from a famous Los Angeles broadcast studio, and have only experienced light and professional use. Both LA-3As are in remarkable cosmetic shape and perfect working condition.
Recently serviced and calibrated by Rob Harvey (a famously brilliant Los Angeles tech), these units are currently in tip-top shape. With high quality XLR pigtails, and upgraded power cable, this unit is noise-free and studio ready.
Marking a departure from the tube design of the LA-2A Leveling Amplifier, the solid-state LA-3A offered a new sound in optical gain reduction, with faster attack and release characteristics that were noticeably different from its predecessor. Immediately embraced as a studio workhorse, the LA-3A is still widely used today. Engineers and producers the world over favor the LA-3A for its unique compression characteristics and sonic signature. When compared side-by-side with an LA-2A, the LA-3A produces a more present, dynamic, and slightly more-defined character. While not as lush as an LA-2A, it is still immensely warm, sweet and musical.
