1968 Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass

This is a 100% original vintage 1968 Hofner 500/1 violin bass guitar. Most notably played by Sir Paul McCartney, this iconic hollowbody bass is instantly recognizable to even those whom are not familiar with basic guitar makes or models. This particular example is in very excellent all original condition and includes the original rectangular hard case and truss rod tool. Some enthusiasts feel that these later production/2nd generation varieties are actually better quality instruments than earlier versions.

This Hofner 500/1 violin bass features:

-Violin shape body design
-German spruce top
-Figured maple back and sides
-Rosewood fingerboard
-Double-bound body and bound neck
-512B “Blade” pickups
-Gold silkscreen logo
-Original rectangular case
-Original truss rod tool

This particular example, number 342 (lightly scratched into the back of the headstock) is a player’s dream. The bass plays and sounds incredible. The neck is perfectly straight, which is often not the case, and the low action enables easy playability. The original electronics are in perfect working condition, and all of the switches and potentiometers function without producing scratchy and dirty noises.

The bass was recently set up with Thomastik flatwound strings, which nicely complement the rich tonal characteristics of the violin bass. Absolutely perfect for recording, while also great for those who want a killer sounding bass for live performances, Hofner basses have become an absolute staple in most studios.

This hollowbody bass is extremely light, and weighs a mere 4 lbs. 13 oz.! This bass sure does produce a substantially heavy sound… considering how light it weighs.
