Here is a vintage 1968 Gibson Everly Brothers flat top acoustic guitar. This particular example, serial number 901498, is in very excellent 100% all original condition and includes an era appropriate non-original hard shell case. 1 of only 48 total Everly Brothers’ produced in ’68, this extremely rare example is in very excellent condition, and would make a very handsome addition to any players’ collection. Early 60’s Everly Brothers are becoming very expensive, so take the opportunity to buy this just as scarce second variety issue for almost half price before they too become economically out-of-reach!
This ’68 Everly Brothers acoustic features: the original Natural finish, a 2-piece tight-grain spruce top, Walnut-stained Maple back and sides, 5-ply bound top, bound back, 3-piece mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with Star inlays, “string-thru” rosewood adjustable bridge with (3) pearl dots, “Star” peghead inlay, (2) black pickguards, and a non-original hard shell case.
Completely original, aside from the typical dealer installed additional Gibson strap pin, this Everly Brothers acoustic is without issue: no cracks, no breaks, no repairs, no nothing. The action is incredibly low, the 1 9/16″ nut width requires some adjusting, but feels fantastic. The original large frets are intact with very little wear.
While The Everly Brothers model is notorious for sounding subdued because of the over-sized pickguards, this particular example manages to produce a surprisingly rich and full sound. Well-articulated and clean, it’s quite an enjoyable acoustic.
The serial number (901498) might be confusing to interpret, as some sources suggest it indicates either a ’68 or a ’70 production, however, the non-volute neck combined with the absence of a “Made in USA” stamp decidedly affirm the production year being 1968.
