Here is a vintage 1966 Hofner 500/1 “violin” electric bass guitar. Most notably played by Sir Paul McCartney, this iconic hollowbody bass is instantly recognizable to even those whom are not familiar with basic guitar makes or models. This particular example is in extremely excellent 100% all original condition, even including the original vintage La Bella flat wound strings and the original soft case! This mid-’60s example features the more desirable “staple” pickups with a raised Hofner plastic logo, which is the exact variety made famous by McCartney while in The Beatles. This exceptionally clean example was recently purchased from the original owner who claimed to have only practiced with it several months in early ’67 before putting it into storage for over 45 years.
This ’66 Hofner 500/1 violin bass features:
– Violin-shape body design
– German spruce top
– Figured maple back and sides
– Bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays
– Double-bound body
– “Staple” Nova-Sonic Twin Coil Humbucking Pickup (Type 511)
– Raised Hofner logo
– Original form-fit soft case
– Original La Bella blue silk flatwound strings
The bass plays and sounds incredible. Clearly, it features the classic Hofner, rich yet percussive, bass tone. The neck is perfectly straight, which is often not the case. The original electronics are in perfect working condition, and all of the switches and potentiometers function without producing scratchy and dirty noises. Absolutely perfect for recording, while also great for those who want a killer sounding bass for live performances, Hofner basses have become an absolute necessity in most studios.
Cosmetically excellent, with a couple of dings on the top from accessories floating within the case, this example might easily be mistaken for a new reissue. While a professional setup is recommended (keep in mind it has never been setup since new) it sill plays and sounds great, though the bridge should be adjusted for optimized lower action.
The original white speckled exterior soft case features the original “Fragile Do Not Crush” sticker on the outside. Clean, yet with excruciatingly cool subtle vibe, this is one of the best Hofner basses we’ve had in quite some time.
