This is a vintage 1966 Harmony H-27 thinline hollowbody electric bass guitar. This particular no-issues example, serial number 6324, in in very good all original condition. In fact, it still retains the original La Bella flat wound strings, with which it is currently set up!
The H-27 bass was Harmony’s finest. Alongside the H-22 single-pickup hollowbody bass, the H-27 was the enhanced double pickup alternative. Initially offered in the 1966 Harmony catalog, the H-27 was created to offer an alternative to similar models being produced by competing manufacturers, such as; the Gibson EB-2, the Guild Starfire Bass and the Fender Coronado Bass.
This ’66 Harmony H-27 features: a double-cutaway double-bound laminated maple body (with an arched top and back) which often displayed modest flame complemented by an “Iced Tea” sunburst finish, (2) DeArmond Golden Tone humbucking pickups, a deluxe “Made in Germany” nickel tailpiece with an adjustable bridge, a bound maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, pearloid dot inlays, unbound f-holes, a Fender-style 4-on-a-side headstock with a tortoise shell pattern celluloid overlay, a chrome Harmony logo, “Made in Japan” deluxe individual tuning machines (like those found on an Epiphone Newport), a rosewood finger-rest and thumb-rest with tortoise shell pattern celluloid caps, brown barrel knobs with chrome caps, a traditional 3-way pickup selector switch with a stretched octagonal tortoise shell pattern celluloid switch switch plate.
Although denoted in the Harmony catalog as an H27, the gold foil label visible through bass side f-hole reads, “MODEL NO. H-27, SERIAL NO. 6324, THE Harmony COMPANY, MADE IN CHICAGO, ILL. U.S.A.” The opposite f-hole typically displays the Harmony date stamp, which consists of a letter and two digits. The letter denoted the season, while the last two digits denote the last two digits of the production year.
The 1966 catalog description reads as follows, “HARMONY’S FINEST THIN HOLLOW BODY ELECTRIC BASS Double Cutaway … Double Pickup, De Armond Designed Styled and electronically equipped to meet highest professional bass tone standards.
