1964 Fender Twin Reverb

Here is a vintage 1964 Fender Twin Reverb- Amp AB763 electric guitar amplifier. This particular example, serial number A00748, is in near mint all original condition and includes the original dual-function VIB/REV footswitch, the original Victoria vinyl cover, the original price hang tag, the original tolex hang tag, the original owner’s manual, as well as the original schematic! Appropriately considered the irrefutable king of clean, the Blackface Twin Reverb has always been synonymous with an abundance of clear headroom with highly musical qualities. The same attributes that make the Twin Reverb notably perfect for surf-inspired pristine guitar tone, are the same that render it appropriate for use with pedal steel, effects pedals, and any other application whereby the most authentic signal path is desired. Impressively not too harsh, nor hi-fi in character, the Twin Reverb is loud, dynamic, clean, robust, and perhaps offers the best examples of both the Reverb and Vibrato effects. Original Twin Reverbs in comparable condition are nearly impossible to find.

Please take note that this rare example is a full-fledged pre-CBS version, with all components, date codes, and factory date stamps designating a December ’64 completion. Fender amp enthusiasts and collectors will confirm that the bulk of Fender Reverb production occurred between 1966-1967, and finding an early FEIC (Fender Elect. Inst. Co. on control panel) Twin Reverb is surprisingly difficult. Compound the improbability of discovering such a rare variant with locating one in near perfect condition, and the likelihood of such is quickly diminished to next to impossible, so, here it is, one of the rarest Twin Reverbs in the best possible condition.

Serial Number: A00748 (very early, first 1,000 made)
Tube Chart Stamp: NL (December 1964)
Speaker Codes: 220420 (Jensen, May ’64)
Transformer Codes: 606443, 606436, -606-4-45 (2)

This pre-CBS ’64 Fender Twin Reverb still retains all the original tubes which include: (4) 6L6, (3) 7025, (2) 12AT7, and (1) 12AX7 tubes through the original matching 2 x 12″ black frame C12N Jensen Special Design speakers.

As can clearly be seen in the photos to the right of this text column, this fine specimen is amongst the nicest to be seen. The grillecloth is particularly clean, without stains, smoke damage, fading, etc. The black tolex is in well-preserved, very clean, original condition. The original control panel is pristine, and the corresponding hardware appears as if it could be from a reissue, it is that clean. The original chrome tilt-back legs are amazingly sheen, and exhibit absolutely no oxidation whatsoever. The amp includes a plethora of ephemera, in fact, it has more original paperwork than any other Fender amp from this era I’ve ever owned. The original footswitch isn’t in perfect condition, but it is very nice.

The amp is highly efficient, and sounds fantastic: great for all guitar types with all possible pickup variations, this Twin Reverb will translate the true sound of your guitar better than any other vintage combo amp. The original Jensen C12N 12″ speakers still retain original paper cones, both of which are incredibly crisp and intact. The amp is really one of the best Twin Reverbs I’ve ever heard. It is both pleasant and smooth with the ability to bite with attack. Surprisingly great with a humbucking pickup and an innately perfect complement for Fender singer-coils, this amp will make any guitar sound good.

It was serviced by a tech, during which the coupling and electrolytic capacitors were replaced. The originals are not included, though for posterity purposes you can easily locate generic era-appropriate blue and orange caps on eBay in affordable lots (less than $60) should the new owner desire. The original 2-prong cable was upgraded to a modern 3-prong grounded power cord.
