This is a vintage 1962 Supro 1688TN Bass Amp electric guitar amplifier. This particular example, serial number T75298, is in nice overall cosmetic condition, has been recently serviced by Classic Amp. Whether you’re looking for an amazing-sounding Jimmy Page-style Supro amp, or an über rare Valco-made specimen, this is certainly a fantastic amp to consider. Though it is designated as being a “Bass Amp” on the control panel, it was most likely originally engineered for guitar, considering the presence of Tremolo and dual 12″ speakers. It is certainly more like a Big Star than a Thunderbolt with regard to design. It sounds fantastic, and is a very serious amp worthy of the best recording studio.
Serial Number: T75298
Transformer Codes: 5246221, 166237
Speaker Date Code: 220245 (Jensen, late ’62)
This ’62 Supro 1688TN utilizes: (1) 5U4, (2) 6L6, and (4) 12AX7 tubes through the original 2 x 12″ Jensen C12 Special Design speakers.
Of course the amp sounds incredible, but what is particularly great is the differentiation between all of the inputs. All (4) inputs sound significantly different, offering a range of rich, thin, loud and saturated tonal options. It produces fantastic overdriven crunch which seems to complement any guitar. This particular amp sounds great with both a Tele and a Les Paul. The original speakers (with original cones) are in perfect structural condition and do not exhibit fatigue. Useful for a number of applications, this is a rare vintage Supro in that it is much more than a one-trick pony, and offers a balanced array of cool and versatile tones.
Cosmetically it is 100% original, however, it appears that the Supro logo is a possible replacement. The sale and pepper exterior is in good condition, and the blue stripe grillecloth is also in good intact condition displaying average storage wear.
