1960s Vox Folk Twelve V239

This is a vintage mid-’60s (circa 1965) Vox Folk Twelve model V239 flat top acoustic 12-string guitar. This particular example, serial number 441231, is in very excellent, near mint, all original condition and includes the original Vox grey hard shell case with original case keys. This same model when outfitted with a built-in pickup was designated as the predictable “Folk Twelve Electric”, though the addition of simple electronics is somewhat extraneous and disappointing. For whatever reason, not many examples have survived in good condition, and the majority that surface are typically riddled with both inherent structural issues and the usual modifications. This specimen sports a perfect setup with incredible action, and is pristinely preserved with no visible wear nor the notorious severe weather-checking which haunts most Italian-made VOX guitars.

This ’65 Vox Folk Twelve features; a double-bound body construction with a solid spruce top and maple back and sides, a 1-piece mahogany neck, a bound rosewood fingerboard with block inlays, a large profile rosewood bridge, Vox labeled tuning machines, Vox etched headstock logo, trapeze tailpiece (as opposed to some models with hexagram bridge pins), large Country & Western style tortoise-shell colored pickguard, and the original grey hard shell case with keys.

As previously suggested, this no-issues example is completely void of all structural problems and defects. The bridge is perfectly affixed to the top and there is no evidence of bellying whatsoever. Unlike most, this example is free of heavy finish checking and other surface cracks. The neck is straight, the neck angle is great, and the action is comfortably low up to the 14th fret, where the body meets the neck. The zero fret allows for nice playability and good intonation. Even though the build quality incorporates an overly generous amount of material and copious finish, the sound doesn’t seem to be restrained or dampened. The bold X-bracing seems to enhance the projection and resonance. A very excellent Italian-made vintage guitar for the price of an entry-level acoustic, this is a great bargain.
