This is a vintage 1960 Oahu White & Gold amplifier. This gorgeous specimen, model no. 415K, was the absolute best amp Oahu had to offer, and the sophisticated cosmetic appointments clearly conveyed such prestige. Made by Valco (Supro, Airline, Gretsch, National, etc.) for an extremely short period of time, this amp was discontinued less than 9 months after being introduced to the Oahu line, making it one of the rarest Valco products ever made. In the last 8 years, only two others have been auctioned online: one of which was heavily modified, so don’t miss out, because these are few and far between!
This particular example, serial number T35684, is in 100% original condition, works perfectly and even includes the original tubes. While this amp may appear to be drastically dissimilar to anything affiliated with Supro, it shares itâs schematic with perhaps the most coveted Supro amp of all: the 1624T. Yep, with an identical design, and the exact same tube configuration, the Oahu White & Gold is essentially a dressed up version of Surpoâs famous 1624T. The only difference is that the Oahu features (2) 6″ x 11″ elliptical speakers, while the 1624T sports a single 12″.
This Oahu, while not in amazing cosmetic condition, is 100% original. The speakers, transformers, tubes and every cap, are original. The original gold grill is in exceptional shape, and the original logo and handle are still both intact. The original white vinyl covering has been torn from the top left corner and around the faceplate. The original gold foil strip has been mostly torn off the top of the amp. The not-so-subtle wear gives it tons of personality.
As for the sound, well, that’s the best part. The 1624, along with the few Valco-made amps to feature a duet of 6973 power tubes, are becoming the stuff of legend. Having owned numerous variations of similar amps, I can say with much experience that the oval/elliptical speakers in this amp sound better than the conventional circular speakers in others. With tremendously musical overdrive and a harmonically rich gain structure, the hype is overwhelmed by the actual greatness of its tone. Perfectly solid when used in conjunction with humbucking pickups, and singingly sweet if played with single-coils, this amp is the microphone’s best friend.
