This is a vintage 1959 Kay “K Up Beat” K8980 archtop hollowbody electric guitar. This particular example, serial number L2345, is in extremely excellent condition and includes a non-original, form-fitting, hard case! Of all the vintage American-made budget instruments, the Kays with the famous Kelvinator headstocks are by far the coolest and most indicative of the late-50’s aesthetic.
This single pickup Blonde version is in very excellent all original condition. It is quite clean, with no issues whatsoever: no breaks, no cracks, no repairs, nor modifications. As is typical, the spruce top exhibits minimal weather-checking, and the figured maple back has attractive flame.
The frets are in excellent intact shape. The neck angle and subsequent action are both in great condition. Recently purchased from a collector, he believed the adjustable maple bridge to be original, though it is more than likely later than the guitar.
