1938 Martin 5-18

For sale is this vintage 1938 Martin 5-18 acoustic guitar with the original case. This particular example from Martin’s golden era of production, serial number 69384, is in very excellent 100% all original condition. Designated by Martin as size “5,” which is smaller than the average 3/4 guitar, the Martin “Terz” is the highest quality small/baby/mini/junior/ladies guitar ever made. Famously played by Marty Robbins, as well as, Michael Hedges, Will Ackerman, and Dolly Parton to name a few, the Martin 5-18 is celebrated for its specific and unique voicing. Do not be fooled by the 5-18′s petite frame, as its child’s size proportions were constructed using the exact same high quality materials and superior craftsmanship as all other Martin acoustics. Not the earliest example in existence, yet still one of virtually none produced during this significant period, this version is incredibly scarce and amazingly well made. This no issues ’38 Martin 5-18 will be officially 75 years old this year, so celebrate appropriately by making it yours!

This ’38 Martin 5-18, much like a D-18, features: a Sitka spruce top, mahogany back/sides/neck, x-braced body construction, original bar (pre-T) frets, an ebony fingerboard, a double-bound body with tortoise purfling, a slotted headstock with Brazilian veneer overlay, a Brazilian rosewood bridge, original nickel-plated classical style tuning machines with Fleur-de-lis stamps, the original tortoise pickguard, and the original case.

This no issues example is in surprisingly well-preserved 100% all original condition. Comparatively, a D-18 from this very same year, in comparable shape, would easily realize a $35,000.00 price tag, so take that into consideration when doing related research. Nothing on this instrument has been modified, changed, broken, repaired, etc. The neck is perfectly straight, and the neck angle is perfectly intact, which makes the guitar truly enjoyable to play The original tuning machines work perfectly, and hold the guitar in tune. The original bar frets exhibit very minimal wear, and do not need to be dressed or replaced. The neck joint is solid, with no evidence of separation or fatigue. The bridge is also perfectly intact, with no indication of lifting or bellying. There are no cracks, no breaks, nor separations. All parts are original to this guitar; from the bridge pins to bracing to the nut.

With a sweet sound all its own, the small size belies the surprisingly pronounced projection and incredible warmth. Clear, clean, yet well-balanced, this is by no means a baby guitar with respect to its monstrous tone.

As mentioned the guitar includes the original case which happens to be in correspondingly nice shape, aside from the broken handle. It is rare to even see a guitar like this with an original case at all, so it is definitely a bonus… although it wouldn’t be wise to try and use it.
