1938 Gibson J-35

This is a vintage 1938 Gibson J-35 jumbo flat top acoustic guitar. This is an incredible guitar in need of several repairs, but for the most part remains original and surprisingly intact. Recently purchased form Fuller’s Guitar of Houston, TX, this was the exact example shipped to Gibson, which served as foundation for their custom Fuller’s J35 reissue! Both a great opportunity to buy an incredibly satisfying acoustic project, as well as, a really interesting piece of modern Gibson memorabilia.

While the detailed photos do a great job of fully illustrating the extent of the condition flaws, I will try my best to further elaborate.

The following is a list of original parts:

– original Mahogany neck with Walnut-stained finish
– original Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard with original frets
– original Spruce top with original Sunburst finish
– original Mahogany back and sides with original Walnut-stained finsih
– original Maple bridge plate
– original “Fire Stripe” pickguard
– original small-profile Brazilian Rosewood bridge
– original non-scalloped bracing
– original stenciled script “Gibson” logo
– original tuning machine post and screw holes
– original binding and soundhole rosette
– original bridge pins
– original strap pin
– original truss rod cover and screws
– original tuning machine ferrules
– original nut and bridge saddle

The following is a list of non-original parts or structural problems:

– replaced tuning machines, though they occupy all of the original holes without them being enlarged or manipulated
– added hole in back of the neck heel from non-original strap pin
– (6+) top cracks
– missing 1″ binding piece in between 2 cracks
– (2) drying cracks in the back
– back and top need to be re-attached

With some expected restoration, this guitar will undoubtedly be an excellent player’s instrument. The top displays extremely minimal bellying (almost none considering), and this is due to the two bulky tone bars used during this era. The bridge is equally solid, and is tightly mounted to the top. The V-shape neck profile is ridiculously comfortable, and the action is really quite comfortable.
